Unassigned Territory

Unassigned Territory 2_edited.jpg

The preaching work of Jehovah's Witnesses is done in a very organized and pragmatic fashion. They do not just randomly pick a street or neighborhood to conduct their preaching work in. Instead, every section of the globe is divided up into territory regions. The more densely populated the area a further dividing of the territory is done: By continent, then country, then state or province, then city, and finally by neighborhood.

Each congregation is assigned a specific number of neighborhood territories to perform the preaching work in. The congregation meets together as one large group for all meetings held at the local meeting place called a Kingdom Hall [A hall or building where God's Kingdom with Christ Jesus as ruler is discussed].

However, for preaching purposes each individual congregation is organized into smaller preaching work groups called field service groups. Records are kept and audited to ensure that each neighborhood in the congregation's assigned territory is worked at a minimum goal of at least once a year, and also to prevent field service groups from duplicating their efforts by preaching in the same territory at the same time.

Even with this organized preaching work structure, there are territories in remote areas of each territory region that due to climate, lack of road infrastructure, and not being a densely populated area requires volunteers from one congregation to be selected and approved to go and assist other congregations in need of help in covering their territory assignment. Some of these territories are not assigned to a specific congregation. They are called "Unassigned Territories". Note an example of this as described below:

THE FOLLOWING IS A COPY OF THE UNASSIGNED TERRITORY REPORT SENT TO THE BRANCH OFFICE:

Dear Brothers:
This letter is being sent as a supplement to the accompanying Unassigned Territory Report. We did not attempt any return visits on the Record of Interest provided to us because after reviewing the documents, these calls were made a few months ago, and there was an area of the county that the previous group did not get a chance to reach. So we concentrated on that area because it had not been worked at all in several years.

The weekend that we worked the territory was unfortunately also the same time that the cities of Effingham and St. Louis were experiencing severe rains, thunder storms and tornado watches. While this affected the amount of the territory we were able to cover it did not dampen our joy for working the assignment and resulted in the following experience:

The territory was comprised of three types of roads: normal paved roads, roads paved with rocks, and dirt roads. Shortly after a heavy rain, the skies cleared and the dirt roads appeared to have dried.

We were eager to pick-up where we left off and continue in the ministry.  We had yet to reach homes that were located on any of the dirt roads due to following the instructions we received from the branch to work primarily in the city when the weather is bad.

Mr. Niemerg and "the infamous red car"

So, before turning onto the dirt road, the Brothers taking the lead (our wives were also traveling with us) examined the small puddles in the road and it appeared to be safe to travel on. Being “city slickers” we did not know any better. After traveling a quarter of the way down the road we realized that the ‘small puddles’ were much deeper than we anticipated. In an attempt to reverse our course, we got stuck. Further efforts to improve our situation ultimately ended with our bright red rental car being halfway in a ditch that was three feet full of water.

As we pondered our situation, the last householder that we spoke with had been very nice and the younger Brother who was with us volunteered to run the total distance of about a mile back to the householder’s home and ask for help. Many of the farm homes in this area look very similar and needless to say the house that the Brother found did not belong to the nice householder we originally met, but belonged to another kind older gentleman, Mr. Niemerg whose home we had not reached as of yet.

The Brother explained who we were, why we were in the area, and our present situation. After laughing hysterically about why we would go down a dirt road after a severe storm, Mr. Niemerg promised to send his son to help us.

The Brother with us returned with the news and shortly afterwards Mr. Niemerg’s son arrived with his tractor to help. He smiled and stated the rhetorical question, “You guys were trying to drive down a dirt road... after a storm?” A few minutes later Mr. Niemerg’s daughter also came, not to help mind you, but just to see “the city folk who would try to drive down a dirt road after a storm.”

Using his tractor, Mr. Niemerg’s son was able to successfully pull us out of the ditch with no damage to our vehicle. We offered to pay him for his time, but he refused to accept it.

"Yup, your in a ditch alright"

We gave him one of our latest brochures and asked him to read about the message that we felt was so important that we would be willing to risk traveling down a dirt road after a rainstorm to deliver. Although being a staunch Catholic, he accepted the material and agreed to read it.

The dirt road that we were stuck on was just off the main highway, and apparently many of the neighbors had seen the Niemerg family assisting us. Unbeknown to us, the Niemergs are a very well known, wealthy, influential family in this community. They are also owners of several businesses including the local popular restaurant. As we continued to preach we found that word had spread throughout the territory of a group in a bright red car that had gotten stuck trying to preach their message.

Niemerg Family Restaurant

The notoriety of what happened had spread throughout the small close knit community. After a while we started to successfully use  our highly publicized situation in conjunction with the name Niemergs as a conversation starter to establish a common ground with the householders in this heavily devout Catholic community.

Many conversations and publications were placed as a result. As signified by his name, Jehovah " caused" something good to come out of a bad decision. Is our God awesome or what!

One of the Sisters with us shared our experience in detail as an informal witnessing opportunity to one of the waitresses that worked at the Niemerg family restaurant. Prior to our departure home, we returned to

Mr. Niemerg’s home and made a return visit on him, thanking him again for his families’ kindness.

Thank you, Brothers for this opportunity to serve Jehovah God in this way. It was a joy to reach and share the Kingdom message with people who had not spoken to one of Jehovah's Witnesses in several years, if ever. We will remember this experience for the rest of our lives.
